A gift from the Uwa Sea
World-renowned pearl farming nurtured by the sea of Uwajima
Uwajima is one of the pioneering origins of Akoya pearl farming in Japan. The pearls cultivated here are highly valued both domestically and internationally for their thick nacre, known as 'thick rolls,' and the deep luster they possess. The secret lies in the tranquility of the ria coastline and the blessings of the Kuroshio Current. The clear seawater and the winter chill provide the final luster known as 'make-up rolls,' completing the unique beauty of Uwajima pearls.
Pearl farming nurtured by rich nature
About a 20-minute drive from Uwajima Station. Enjoying the breathtaking views of the ria coastline outside the window, we drive along the coastline with a pleasant sea breeze.
As I am healed by the shimmering gentle waves, the destination we are heading to gradually comes into view.
Since its establishment in 1957, 'Doi Pearl' has continued to walk alongside this sea.
Reliable quality maintained by the sea and artisans
The artisans of Uwajima have faced pearls earnestly for over 100 years. The conditions for producing good pearls are four essential elements: 'rich fishing grounds,' 'high skills,' 'healthy mother oysters,' and 'careful management.'
The blessings of the Kuroshio Current, changes in water temperature, the breath of the oysters... all of these influence the luster of the pearls.
The pearls of Uwajima are 'miraculous crystals' co-created by the artisans' craftsmanship and the great sea.
A unique piece of art created by the sea
Enjoying pearls with different expressions
Similarly, the 'shape' is rich in individuality. The organic form known as 'baroque' (irregular pearls) is not a defect but a testament to the life of the oyster. If a perfect sphere is a crystallization of technique, baroque pearls are 'one-of-a-kind art' created by nature.
No two shapes are the same in the world.
Enjoying communication through pearls
After a leisurely 10-minute walk through a gentle arcade that retains a nostalgic Showa retro atmosphere, you will find 'Inoue Pearl Store'.
Welcoming you with a bright smile is Ms. Sachiko Inoue. Here, a "Pearl Beginner's Course" is being held for those who are handling pearls for the first time. From choosing a pearl that suits you to maintenance techniques for long-term enjoyment, everything is explained clearly and carefully for beginners.
The first gem humanity ever possessed
The highest quality pearls I experienced reflected my face clearly like a mirror. This overwhelming 'teri' (luster) and transparency are the true signs of authenticity. By touching numerous pearls and learning the differences in their luster, one's aesthetic sense is naturally refined.

I had the pleasure of supporting two wonderful guests from Australia. Although my interpretation was not perfect, they were able to grasp the content well. I hope they could feel the depth of beauty that cannot be defined by a single standard.
